Animal shelter moving toward September opening

We've never been so close to having an animal shelter in Randolph County.
Shelter manager Laura Gasser said plans are now for the new Randolph County Animal Shelter in Wedowee to open sometime the first part of September.
Presently volunteers are busy finishing up the inside of the building and an addition has begun out back. Work had ceased when in fall of 2005 it was announced that the shelter would receive a $100,000 federal grant that could be used only for construction.
The animal shelter board chose to save the money it had spent years raising through fundraisers since the federal money could not be used for any other purpose. That money finally was received this summer.
During a quick guided tour of the facility, we visited the cat room, where happy cats can play freely while their more withdrawn counterparts can stay in a cage; a room for the washer, dryer and dishwasher; an room for bathing animals; a treatment room; and two large rooms with floor drains for dog runs. A fenced area will be available for those dogs that play well with others.
The new part under construction will be a quarantine area so that animals just brought in with an uncertain history may be separated from the others for a period of time to avoid spread of illnesses.
According to Gasser, a couple of veterinarians have offered to be involved with the shelter, and two volunteers have been certified to euthanize. Jennifer Kollenberg was hired as a veterinary technician.
Pet Wish Day at Wal-Mart in Roanoke will be Saturday, Aug. 25. Girl Scouts will be at the entrance passing out the shelter's wish list. Items in the store will be marked, too.
